VOLUX Phantom Stays in Orbit for Train’s Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere Tour

[WEST PALM BEACH, FL] – VOLUX Lighting outfitted Train’s Drops of Jupiter: 25 Years in the Atmosphere Tour with 48 Phantom IP65 WashBeam moving heads, giving lighting designer Joel Wojcik a rig built to move fast and hold up night after night on the road. LMG Touring is providing audio, video and lighting for the tour, which kicked off July 9 at iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre with support from Barenaked Ladies and Matt Nathanson.

Wojcik specified the Phantom for its combination of output and compact size, running all 48 units as the core of the tour’s moving-light package. Each Phantom pairs a 19x60W RGBL LED engine with 76 RGB backlit LEDs for a combined 24,000 lumens, giving the rig enough punch for sheds and amphitheaters while staying light enough to fly efficiently — a common trade-off Wojcik didn’t have to make.

The fixture’s 4.5° to 60° motorized zoom and adjustable 2,000K to 8,000K color temperature range let the design move between tight beam looks and broad, warm washes without a fixture change, while the indexable rotating split-beam lens gave Wojcik an added mid-air effect for transitions between songs. The primary and backlit LED engines are independently controllable, opening up pixel-mapped looks alongside standard wash and beam cues from the same fixture.

Built IP65-rated with a coastal-rated CM-4 coating, the Phantom is engineered to run outdoors without missing a beat — a fit for an amphitheater kickoff like iTHINK Financial, and for whatever open-air dates follow it down the road. At 50.7 lbs each, the units also kept rigging loads manageable on a tour moving fast between stops.

Each Phantom runs on DMX512, Art-Net, sACN and RDM with channel modes up to 321, and the fixture’s 16-bit dimming and 0-25Hz electronic shutter gave Wojcik fine control over intensity and strobe effects night to night.
